LIGHT OUTLOOK TOWER

Doha, Qatar

Sou Fujimoto

?

To continue with the theme of falling water cascades, the next work to describe is the Light Outlook Tower. For this project Sou Fujimoto designed a master plan for the city of Doha composed by the superposition of modular arches that create a harmonious silhouette, reinterpreting the inherent beauty of vernacular islamic architecture which shape refers to the traditional bedouins tents. Those arches vary in size according to program and their main purpose is to provide a simple system of organization within an “unique and timeless architectural expression”.

Fujimoto states that he believes that ‘the architecture of the future lay within some being akin to a forest’, a conceptual idea that is put into practice for the theoretical design of this landmark complex by incorporating into it distinct strategies.

Fresh breezing at the bottom and evaporative cooling are achieved thanks to the incorporation of many water cascades that descends from different levels to the base of the construction. In terms of natural light, south facing facades bring it into indoor spaces avoiding overheating. When passing through the concave structures that constitute the complete shape, a subtle dimness is obtained, thus creating a tranquil and calm atmosphere. As the architect describes, “by combining the transparency of the arches with the stepping waterfalls, a dynamic play with light and shadow is created, while appearing mirage-like”.
